I need a sign language interpreter for my wedding…?

Posted in interpreter sign language | January 26th, 2009

I'm getting married this August in Carlisle, PA (17013) and I need to hire a sign language interpreter. My fiance's parents are deaf, and some of our guests are deaf as well. My fiance and I both sign, but we definitely need to hire interpreter to make sure that everyone is fully included. I have found some interpreter registries on the web, but I was wondering if anyone has any personal recommendations of an interpreter in my area.

More generally, has anyone worked with an interpreter before? What qualifications should I look for? There are so many different types of certification- are some better than others? Anyone been to a wedding with an interpreter before? What worked, what didn't work? Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks.
I forgot to say- my fiance's parents live in a different state, so we've been put in charge of finding the interpreter ourselves.

Contact your local society for the deaf. They can put you in touch with someone who can answer your questions and perhaps put you in contact with an interpreter for hire. Check the Yellow Pages.

Is there an online school for american sign language?

Posted in sign language american | January 26th, 2009

Hi, I am looking for an online school to do American Sign Language, I have tried and tried to look but I am not sure where to go…any help would be great

There are a number of colleges that offer programs for sign language, even some online. If you are looking to get a degree or certification, the best website to go to is www.rid.org. (registry of interpreters for the Deaf). on that website, you can search schools with an online program.

If you don't care about getting an actual degree, you can learn ASL online at aslpro.com, signingonline.com, and handspeak.com.

how much does a sign language interpreter make ?

I guess it depends on where you work. If its a not for profit agency you will make less than if if you worked for a privately owned business. A great place to start may be a big hospital in your area. Many patients dont speak english and they have international departments that handle translations, which includes sign language. They can give you an idea of salary.

Where do I find Jehovah’s Witnesses on American Sign Language?
I looked at www.watchtower.org but find nothing at all.
I wonder if anyone of you knew where I can find them.
Actually , I’m look for like something like youtube Sign Language.
Please no nasty youtube.
Thank you.

Here is a link to our most recent tract campaigns in ASL online: http://www.watchtower.org/asl/index.html

Also, if you go to your local Kingdom Hall, there are many videos in ASL you can order. Or, you may ask whomever is studying with you to order those for you. You may also write to the branch to request those.

Here is a link showing the various publications available on videocassette and DVD in the various sign languages: http://www.watchtower.org/e/sign.htm

Hope that helps! :)

Is sign language for deaf people international or are there such things as sign language Interpreters?

Posted in interpreter sign language | January 12th, 2009

I see the signing people on UK TV and was wondering if for instance, a Spaniard would understand it ?
Renault V. Not you again, nobody is daft enough to click a link by a moron who only joined today. Go and play somewhere else silly boy.
It is the same phishing attack site as usual.

No it's not international. Different countries have their own sign language just as they do spoken language. You will also find that as with the spoken language, there are also regional "dialects" and different slang words! And yes, there are such things as sign language interpreters
